Nobody wants to spend more than they have to on a mower or tractor. However, you don't want to get something that won't do what you need. So, how do you know what to get? Below is a guide to help you narrow down all of the choices.
First, what are you going to do?
- Will you just be mowing? Then a zero-turn would be best. This will allow you to finish quickly.
- Do you need to pull a cart? While some high-end zero-turns can handle this, you would probably be better off with a tractor type mower. They will mow and still handle some pulling.
- Will you use ground engaging attachments (tiller, box blade, rotary cutter)? You will need a sub-compact, compact, or utility tractor. Which one will depend on your plans. Each type has activities that they are better suited for. Sub-compacts will fit into smaller spaces while utility tractors are more rugged and cost less.
Next, how much do you have to mow? What is your lawn like?
- Bigger isn't always better with deck sizes. Yes, they are faster, but if you ground is sloped, large decks can cut uneven. This problem has been reduced by wheels, but it still exists.
- Do you have trees, lawn ornaments, and other things to mow around. This can be done with tractor type mowers, but zero-turns are better.
- Do you have gates or narrow spaces to pass through. Large decks will not be useful in these areas.
You also need to consider comfort. Lighter mowers are less expensive, but they also bounce worse. That puts strain on your back. Heavier units don't bounce and ride smoother. We also have zero-turns that have front or rear wheel suspension, which helps even more.
To decide what you need. Take a look at you yard. How big is it? Any obstacles? Will you be doing more than just mowing? Take some time to consider these variables.
