Once you buy your mower, tractor, or any other piece of equipment. Please take the time to maintain it properly. Each unit is different as to how you take care of it, but many share similar methods. For example, if it uses oil, it needs to be changed. Below is a list showing the most common maintenance actions to perform.
- Check the air filter. Clean or replace when necessary. A clogged air filter keeps the engine from running right. Without air, the combustion will not occur. Now, if the filter does get clogged, the engine will begin to pull air from the crankcase, and with it, oil. This will add the oil into the combustion process, which will result in dark smoke, oil consumption, and possible internal damage.
- Check the spark plugs. If they do not work right, the engine won't either. When they are visibly fouled, it is necessary to replace the plugs. This will improve fuel economy and how the engine runs.
- Change the oil. While each engine is different, the oil needs to be changed every year at the very least. It is better to change it more often. Many people put this off, but changing the oil on a regular basis will improve the life of the engine.
